SeaShare, a leading non-profit organization helping the seafood industry donate to hunger-relief efforts in the United States, announced that Trident Seafoods has received its “Top Donor” award for donating 30 million servings to food banks around the country over the past 30 years. The award was presented to Trident's CEO, Joe Bundrant, at Seafood Expo North America (SENA) in Boston, Mass.
“It’s staggering to think that approximately one in five Americans don’t know where their next meal will come from,” Bundrant said. “Through our work with SeaShare, we’re proud to have donated more than 30 million servings of nutritious, wild Alaska seafood to food banks and feeding centers around the country since 1994."
According to a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) study, while over 87% of U.S. households were food secure in 2022 - meaning those households had consistent, dependable access to enough food for active, healthy living - nearly 13% of households experienced food insecurity. That means more than 44.2 million Americans - a number greater than the total population of Canada (38.93 million) - lived in homes that had difficulty providing enough food the members of their household.
A more recent study, completed in 2023 by the Urban Institute, found that nearly one in six adults in the U.S. reported their households received charitable food during the year prior. Sobering statistics like this are why non-profit organizations like SeaShare are critical to helping put an end to hunger.
SeaShare and Trident Seafoods have been partners in the fight against hunger since SeaShare’s inception in 1994. In addition to donations of nutritious, sustainable seafood, Trident provides support to SeaShare so that seafood can be sent food banks as quickly and efficiently as possible.
“Trident Seafoods’ generosity and leadership have been instrumental in building SeaShare into the largest seafood donor in the country to Feeding America food banks and feeding centers,” said Jim Harmon, SeaShare Executive Director.
Trident Seafoods is one of the largest vertically integrated seafood companies in the country. Giving back to the communities it operates in aligns with Trident’s core values of caring for each other and doing the right thing, and the company recognizes the incredible health benefits that seafood provides to those facing food insecurity.
Added Bundrant, "While the work to end hunger doesn’t stop with this award, we’re honored and humbled to be recognized by SeaShare.”
